What is Ash Wednesday?

Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent, occurring six and half weeks before Easter.

It is a solemn reminder of human mortality and the need for reconciliation with God and marks the beginning of the penitential Lenten season.

It is commonly observed with ashes and fasting. Traditionally the ashes used in this ceremony come from the burning of the palms used in the previous year's Palm Sunday procession.
